Math The math program is based on the sixth grade standards set by the state math framework. We use the state adopted textbook published by GLENCOE as well as other supplemental materials.
One of the goals for sixth grade math homework is to practice your basic computation skills. This includes whole number addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as well as addition and subtraction with decimals. Along with basic skills practice is practice on new learning from the sixth grade standards. Students will receive a homework packet every Monday and it will be due on Friday of the same week. The assignments in the packet will include skills practice as well as new learning.
Sixth Grade Math includes proficiency in the following areas: *Addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals- up to 6 digits *Multiplication facts up to and including 12 x 12 *Multiplication of whole numbers - be able to multiply at least 3 digits by 2 digits *Division facts up to and including 144 ÷ 12 *Division of whole numbers -be able to divide at least a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number
3-Ring Binder Notebook The students are to maintain a 3-Ring binder notebook for math. Please note that if your child has me for both math and science, one notebook is fine. Notebook items include calendar planner, math workbook, and daily work assignments. Dividers will help to organize the binder. Students are to bring their 3-Ring binder notebook to school with them daily. There will be periodic notebook checks.
Supplies Any student who wishes to bring their OWN supplies may use the following list of recommended supplies. Donations are also appreciated. *3-Ring Binder (1½” to 2”) *Line paper *1 set of 6 dividers for notebook *several sharpened pencils *pencil sharpener with cap to collect shavings *2-red pens (for correcting) *erasers *zipper pencil case (3-hole type to keep in binder) Optional supplies include: *colored pencils *yellow highlighter *glue stick
Calendar Planner Another organizational tool that is used by the whole school is the Calendar Planner. The planner is a helpful tool for your child to write homework assignments and projects with due dates. The planner is also used as a communication tool for notes between the teacher and parent. I use the planner as a way to inform you if your child is completing assignments and homework. You may also write in the planner if you have a question or concern. Please remember though, it is your child’s responsibility to show you or me the planner if one of us has written in it. Another good idea is for your child to have a study buddy to exchange phone numbers with to call for missed assignments.
