Hutchinson's STEM Magnet Program is an introduction to engineering principles and a pathway into the Engineering Academy at La Mirada High School. Our sequence of courses begins in 6th grade and have PLTW: Project Lead the Way component. If you would like to apply for our Magnet Program, the application is below. You can email the completed form to firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com or bring it to our front office.
ENGINEERING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
The focus of the course is on the importance and impact of energy, alternative energy sources, energy consumption through energy efficiency, and demonstrating different energy concepts. Students will build CO2 dragsters, survival shelters, mouse trap cars, and solar cars.
AUTOMATION AND ROBOTICS
The focus of the course is on mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, computer control systems, and programming basic robot behaviors including using motors, sensors, and programming language. Students will build structural bridges and programming with VEX Robotics.
DESIGN AND MODELING
The focus of the course is on the engineering design process and tools, including basic programming skills. Students will sketch isometric designs, use computer graphic design software to build the design, and then create a three-dimensional model of it using a 3D printer. Students will also program VEX Robotics and drones.
